Food and Digestion

Kia Ora Whanau,

I have completed teaching Food and Digestion Unit to my Year 9T Science students. The  Success Criteria that I wanted my students to achieve upon completion of the unit are as follows:
  • Name the parts of the human digestion system including each type of tooth.
  • Describe the steps of the digestion process from ingestion to excretion.
  • Describe what happens to the food in each part of the digestive system.
  • Explain why enzymes are important to digestion.
  • Name the five food groups.
  • Describe a chemical test to identify starch, glucose, protein and lipid in food.
  • Explain why each food group is needed in the human body.
  • Describe animals as either carnivores, herbivores or omnivores.
  • Relate the feeding mechanism of carnivores, herbivores and omnivores to their food types.

In the comments below are the students reflection that demonstrates their understanding of the success criteria. Please feel free to comment on students reflections.

Atoms

Kia Ora. With 9T Science class the main concept I was trying to teach was how to calculate and work out the Atomic number and the mass number.  We also learned how to calculate Protons, Electrons and Neutrons from the mass and atomic number.  The class tried for the first twenty elements from the periodic table.  Please Tamariki can you write your reflection as a comment below.

States of Matter

Today we have been learning about the three states of matter.  We learned that solids and particles are held together tightly.  Liquid particles have small gaps between them and the particles in gases are further apart.

Write a reflection that demonstrates your understanding for these three states of matter.  Try to use real world examples from your everyday activities.
